I leased a warehouse when my business grew. Partway through the first year, the neighboring tenant caused a sewer backup that left water puddling on my side of the building.

The second time this happened, my landlord texted me, “Let’s talk about this next week.”

I went shopping.

Right away I found a nearly perfect space, one I’d driven by daily but assumed was too small. It wasn’t. With over 7k square feet, it was larger than my existing space and had one most endearing feature: it would be mine.

I called my Dad, a retired businessman, to ask his opinion. He left me a voicemail in return, “I can’t think of a worse thing for you to do.”

Meanwhile, a retired pastor friend, also a businessman, reached out to me with more encouraging words:

> It’s a good location and you will never regret owning a good property if you can make it work.

I bought the space, and business has grown since.

I didn’t forgot my father’s words, though. And earlier, years ago, when I had confided in him how unhappy I was in my marriage, his response had been, “But he’s so devoted to you.”

So when a few months after closing on the warehouse, I found myself unexpectedly able to buy a home and leave my 21-year marriage, I thought back to the “support” my only parent had given.

And I stayed silent.

He got the news of both the split and the new house when I sent him a change of address notice months later, comfortably situated in my new home.

In the sovereign era, seats at this table are earned, not given.
